The rule for an Advent weekend is simple: your car should be charging while you are having dinner, going for mulled wine, or walking back from the market to your room. If your trip plan depends on a public charger somewhere near the city center, it is easy to lose the evening driving around and waiting.
That is why, for Christmas markets, a hotel with a real on-site Type 2 wallbox works better than a fast charger 3 km away. Especially for stays of 1–2 nights.
When the 2026 Christmas markets begin
Below are the dates and opening hours according to the organizers. Before you leave, it is worth checking the event website once more — small schedule changes do happen in December.

Germany
- Dresden, Striezelmarkt at Altmarkt: 25.11–24.12.2026, on 24.12 until 14:00
https://striezelmarkt.dresden.de/de/ - Nuremberg, Christkindlesmarkt at Hauptmarkt: 27.11–24.12.2026, daily 10:00–21:00, on 24.12 until 14:00

Advent weekends 2026
- 28–29.11
- 5–6.12
- 12–13.12
- 19–20.12
The biggest crowds usually arrive on Saturday after 16:00. If you can, arrive earlier, plug in your car before check-in, or choose accommodation where a charging spot can be reserved in advance.
The most convenient 1-night scenario
- Arrival
- between 14:00 and 17:00, before the area around the market gets congested
- Charging
- 11–22 kW AC overnight instead of fast DC in the evening
- Benefit
- 6–10 hours parked usually means a full or nearly full battery
How to choose a hotel with a real Type 2 in Poland
Not every hotel with charging means the same thing. For a Christmas market trip, four things matter:
1. Is it really an on-site Type 2 wallbox
Look for clear information: Type 2, 11 kW or 22 kW, on-site spaces. The phrase charging available is often too vague. Sometimes it means a regular socket, sometimes a public station next to the building, and sometimes a charger in the garage available only by arrangement.
2. How many charging points there are and whether they belong to the hotel parking
Two AC points at the property is already a sensible start. One point at a large hotel on a December weekend can turn into a lottery.
3. Whether charging works overnight
If the property page says during hotel hours or confirm at reception, do that before booking. Do not assume you will be able to plug in at 22:30 without any formalities.
4. What it costs
For a short trip, predictability often matters more than the price itself. It is better to know in advance whether you pay per kWh, per session, or for parking plus charging.
Gdańsk: two addresses worth checking before the weekend
For the market in Gdańsk, staying in or right next to the city center works well. That way the car stays parked and you spend the evening on foot.
Grano Hotel Gdańsk Riverside
Toruńska 12
On site: 2 × 22 kW Type 2, charging paid, availability during hotel hours.
Property page: https://chargeandsleep.com/hotels/grano-hotel-gdansk-riverside-gdansk
This is a sensible option if you want to walk to the center without moving the car. But this is exactly where it is worth asking two things: whether a charging space can be reserved and what availability during hotel hours actually means.
Hotel Marina Club
Szafarnia 10
On site: 2 × 22 kW Type 2.
When booking, confirm the usage rules, the cost, and whether the spaces are reserved for hotel guests. In December, those three questions save a lot of stress.
Drivers most often overlook this detail
Ask the hotel to add this to your booking: date, approximate arrival time, car model, and a request for a Type 2 space. A phone note alone is often too vague.
Wrocław and Kraków: what to look for when booking
In this article, we are not making a long list of properties on every street. For Wrocław and Kraków, the selection method matters more than a random directory.
Wrocław
For the market in Wrocław, the best option is accommodation within walking distance of the market square or with convenient tram access, but with charging on hotel grounds. The city center is crowded in December, so evening trips out for quick DC can easily cost you an hour or two.
Look for a property that states the AC power and the number of spaces. If a hotel only says charger for electric cars, ask about Type 2 and the actual power.
Kraków
In Kraków, there is one more thing: from 1.01.2026 the SCT is in force, but BEVs are allowed to enter under the Electromobility Act. For a Christmas market trip, that is good news, because you do not have to rule out accommodation closer to the center just because of the zone itself.
For a hotel in Kraków, the same things matter again: an on-site wallbox, overnight parking, and clear rules. If the property has only one charger, ask directly how they handle it when two cars arrive on the same evening.
Germany: a hotel with charging matters even more than in Poland
For trips to Dresden, Berlin, or Nuremberg, overnight AC usually beats improvising. Not because there are no public chargers, but because it is a waste of time to deal with charging logistics during a Christmas market trip.
Dresden and Nuremberg
If you are going to the Striezelmarkt or Christkindlesmarkt, choose a hotel with parking and on-site charging, even if it is slightly more expensive than a property without a wallbox. For 1–2 nights, that extra comfort usually pays for itself in time and peace of mind.
Berlin
Berlin is a good example of a city where low-emission zones really matter. If you are planning to stay closer to the center and want to leave the car in the hotel parking lot, check not only the charging but also the location relative to the zone.
What changed in Germany from 1.10.2026
This is the most important update for Polish BEV drivers heading west of the Oder in December 2026.
From 1.10.2026, vehicles marked as electric in accordance with § 11 of the German FZV are exempt from the requirement to have a green Umweltplakette in German low-emission zones. The change follows from 35. BImSchV, Annex 3 No. 11. In addition, § 11(5) FZV treats relevant foreign license plates as equivalent to the German electric vehicle marking.
In practice, this means one thing:
- a Polish BEV with green license plates no longer needs a green Umweltplakette to enter a German low-emission zone,
- the same applies to hydrogen vehicles with the proper marking,
- if you already have the sticker, you do not need to remove it.
That does not mean the zones have disappeared. They still exist, and for cars that do not meet the conditions, the rules still apply. According to ADAC, the penalty for entering without the required sticker is €100.
Important distinction: BEV yes, PHEV be careful
This is not something to guess about.
- BEV with Polish green plates: the exemption applies.
- PHEV from Poland: they usually have white plates, so the exemption is not visible from the plate itself. We are not promising an automatic exemption here — check the conditions and documents before your trip.
- Combustion cars and regular hybrids: no change, the existing sticker rules still apply.
Do not confuse the exemption with the end of the zones
From 1.10.2026, a Polish BEV with green plates does not need an Umweltplakette, but the low-emission zones in Germany still exist. Before entering a city, check the Umweltzonen map, especially if your accommodation is in the center.
Where to check the zone
Do not put definitely yes or definitely no into your plan. The safest option is to check the official UBA Umweltzonen map:

An example of a city with a zone: Berlin, especially the center inside the S-Bahn Ring.
Evening and morning: how to make the most of overnight charging
For a Christmas market trip, you usually do not need spectacular charging power. You need predictability.
How much a night on AC gives you
If the hotel has 11 kW AC and the car stays plugged in for 8 hours, then in a typical scenario you will recover enough energy to comfortably drive home or reach the next reliable fast charger on the route. With 22 kW AC, it still depends on the car's onboard charger, but for many drivers it still means a comfortable buffer without any morning hassle.
You do not need to charge to 100% if you are driving 180–300 km the next day and have reliable HPC on the way. For a weekend trip, what matters more is leaving in the morning without a detour to a charger.
A simple 1-night plan
- Arrive at the hotel with 20–40% battery.
- Plug in the car right away.
- Walk to the market.
- In the morning, unplug, pay, and leave without an extra stop in the city.
Two ways to handle a Christmas market weekend
Hotel with Type 2
- The car charges during your stay
- You spend the evening in the center, not at a charger
- You leave in the morning without an extra stop
Public charging only
- Risk of an occupied point at peak times
- Possible detour and loss of 30–90 minutes
- You often have to move the car

Trasa · depends on your starting point
Poland → Gdańsk, Wrocław, Kraków, Dresden, Berlin or Nuremberg
- 1Arrive at the hotel before the evening peak
- 2Overnight AC Type 2 charging
- 3Walk to the market without looking for a charger
The shortest advice for a December trip is simple: first choose the market, then the hotel with a real Type 2, and only after that the restaurants and walking plan. In an EV, that order really makes a difference.
Looking for accommodation with on-site charging?
Check hotels with charging listings and choose a property where you can plug in overnight, not after the market closes.
